Many of us simply do not have any idea about the facts related to hair and this is what we will cover in details through this article.
Our hair grows at the speed of 0.3 mm to 0.5 mm every day and therefore it grows almost by 1 to 2 cm every month. The hair goes through the following phases which are the anagen phase, catagen phase and the telogen phase. After going through all these phases it completes one cycle.
On an average each cycle last for around 3 years and 4 months and there are 25 such life cycles in a human being’s life. The anagen phase lasts for 3 years whereas the catagen phase lasts for 3 weeks and the telogen phase lasts for 3 months. On an average there are about 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh of hair on the scalp.
The major part of the hair is made up of a protein named keratin which actually makes the hair good, healthy and strong. Hair is as strong as a wire of iron so it can take upto 60 kgs of weight and it is also elastic in nature as it can be stretched upto 70 % of its length.
Hair loss can never be quantified so for some even losing 30 to 40 strands per day is abnormal and for the others losing about 100 strands per day can be normal, actually it is the A:T ratio that is the anagen to telogen ratio which can actually help in diagnosing the hair fall.
One is born with certain no of hair follicles since birth and that can never be increased in life as growth of hair from new follicles is not possible.
The baldness which is genetic in its nature can be due to the genes received from the father’s side or from the mother’s side so one can inherit baldness genes from father or the mother or from both of them.
Hair fall generally occurs 3 months after delivery, major illness, poor diet, poor lifestyle adaptation, physical or mental stress and so on. We call this as a delayed reaction as the cause of the hair fall can be linked to 3 months before the time of actual hair fall and the patient can really not correlate the cause and effect of the hair fall.
