Male Pattern Baldness: Men have the male hormone androgen and women have the male hormone androgen and the female hormone oestrogen. This male hormone androgen is a very peculiar hormone because this is the hormone is responsible for the growth of hair all over our body, at the same time; this hormone reduces the growth of the hair in the fronto-vertex region leading to various stages of baldness. When we achieve puberty, the male hormone starts attacking the hair genes.

In people whose genes are genetically predisposed to weakness when this male hormone starts attacking it, the gene starts collapsing, leading into the destruction of hair in the fronto-vertex region, which is called as the fronto-vertex balding or androgenic alopecia. Slowly a man starts losing hair, first in the frontal region, then in the front and the vertex, and ultimately he would have hair all over the scalp that is at back and above the ear and the hair in the remaining part of the scalp would disappear, which is called as male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia.

Female pattern baldness:

In woman, the female hormone oestrogen, prevent the bad action of androgen on the hair gene. That is why the ratio of a woman going bald to men is 1 is to 100. But in some circumstances, when the female hormone oestrogen levels start dipping inside a woman's body, for example after pregnancy, menopause, stress or female contraceptive pills, then the male hormone androgen starts its action on the hair genes and the hair starts becoming scanty in the fronto-vertex region. A woman doesn't go bald because whatever the circumstances oestrogen remains in the body to a particular level. That is why we would see scantiness but not baldness in a woman. This is called female pattern baldness or female pattern thinning.
